The luster of gold adds beauty to your silver jewelry and value. It can make all the difference in the struggle to get a good price for your jewelry. Join us for this two day workshop to learn affordable techniques to add a touch of gold to your silver jewelry.
On the first day students will learn how to solder a 14K bezel and how to solder that bezel to sterling. We’ll also explore fun ways to add gold to your sterling surfaces with gold solder. Students will combine these techniques to make one or two projects, like a ring with a gold bezel setting.
Day two introduces fusing gold on sterling. This is a great way to add affordable amounts of gold to your work, whether you add a little or a lot. We’ll use the rolling mill or hammers to inlay the gold into your sterling and make something fun, like earrings.
Along the way, we’ll discuss types of flux, solder and restrictions for combining gold and silver.
Techniques covered include:
• Soldering gold
• Soldering a 14K gold bezel to sterling
• Gold surface treatments, like gold wash and solder inlay
• Fusing gold to sterling
Kit of materials, full color handout and use of tools included.
Students must have prior experience with the fundamentals of jewelry, like successfully completing 2 fabrication workshops. Basic skills include sawing, filing, soldering, finishing, and using power tools like the flex shaft. We recommend our Basic Jewelry 1 workshops for the basics, and encourage our students to take at least one additional level 2 fabrication class that includes soldering before working with gold.
